Soit on change les consignes des arbitres et le PSG finit à 10 contre 8 et gagne 8-0 (et on se fait chier mais avec du spectacle), soit on fait monter le niveau en face et le PSG gagne moins mais avec des matchs sympas à regarder.

The house that Aulas built: Why the 2019 World Cup’s biggest matches are being played in Lyon instead of Paris

When the 2019 World Cup’s final matches kicked off this week, the pulse of the tournament shifted to Lyon—a city once known as the silk capital of the world.

Earlier matches were held in cities that boast a strong pedigree for the women’s game, including Reims, which was the crucible of its mid-1960s resurgence, and Montpellier, which was where ex-president Louis Nicollin created the country’s first professional women’s team in 2001. But no other place has become as synonymous with world-class women’s soccer as Lyon.

It’s a triumphant turn in the spotlight for this city on the Rhône and Saône Rivers. Hosting the semifinals and final defies the centuries-long norm in France, where the center of culture, business, sports and more has radiated from Paris. The fact that the capital city boasts two large stadiums built for major sporting events is even more illustrative of the weighty symbolism given to Lyon.

Nicolas Kssis-Martov, a journalist for soccer magazine So Foot, noted the merits of Parc des Princes, the home of Paris Saint-German that hosted some of the group and knockout-round matches. “It’s a very beautiful stadium and perfect for soccer,” he said. But with a capacity for around 48,000 people, it was too small for the competition’s final grand matches.

Yet, Paris’ other major outdoor sports arena—the 80,000-person capacity Stade de France in the northern suburb of Saint-Denis—was too large.

“(The local organizing committee) clearly did not think that they could fill that stadium,” he said.

That’s why the 59,186-seat Groupama Stadium in Lyon, some 15 miles east of Lyon’s historic center, was the best fit. Inaugurated three years ago, Groupama Stadium was the largest to be included in the French host bid, but was also nearly certain to sell out, which it did for both semifinals and the final in early March. According to a spokesperson for the local organizing committee, individual tickets for games were gone hours after going on sale.

But Lyon’s symbolism as a global epicenter for women’s soccer is also a crucial element in explaining why the tournament’s biggest matches are played in the country’s second largest urban area.

The hometown team, Olympique Lyonnais Féminin, is the world’s most dominant. Since OL president Jean-Michel Aulas launched the women’s section in 2004, it has won six Champions League and 13 French championship titles.

This winning record has translated into a built-in fan base. In April, OL supporters set a record for women’s game attendance in France (25,907 people)—a number nearly matched a week later for OL’s Champions League semifinal against Chelsea.

“In Lyon, there’s a strong tradition of big crowds who go to watch women’s soccer,” Kssis-Martov explained. “That’s already a habit.”

While it’s the players, coaches and staff who bring home trophy after trophy, it is Aulas who has empowered them to make magic, season after season.

“It’s remarkable,” said Béatrice Barbusse, a sports sociologist and author of Du Sexisme dans le sport, of how Aulas created the OL Féminin phenomenon. “He paid his players more, he has a staff and all the conditions for them to train at the highest level. There is everything at Lyon for them to have the chance to win. And they’ve won at all levels.”

The dedication of resources and world-class training facilities has lured some of the best players in the game to Lyon over the years. In the club’s early days, Aulas courted big-name stars like Hope Solo, Aly Wagner and other Americans to flesh out his fledgling vision. But he also invested in French talent, like Louisa Nécib-Cadamuro, who returned to the public eye this summer to be part of this historic tournament after retiring three years ago.

Nécib-Cadamuro helped establish OL as a winning side in her nine years with the club. But she credits Aulas with providing the investment and support for her and her teammates at a time when few in the business did.

That’s begun to change, as OL’s unmatched success has spurred on other owners to invest in their own women’s teams. Take the example of OL’s chief domestic rival, Paris Saint-Germain, which has invested heavily in its women’s team, but not to the same extent as Aulas. Unlike OL, PSG Féminin players do not share the same facilities or always play home matches in the same stadium as their male counterparts. And despite the financial infusion provided by PSG’s Qatari owners, its top players are paid less than OL’s.

According to a study by French sports daily L’Équipe, France’s best paid footballer on the women’s side is Ada Hegerberg, who is estimated to make €400,000 per year (€35,000 per month). Other top OL earners include Amandine Henry and Wendie Renard (€29,000 gross per month), whereas PSG’s higher French earners contesting the World Cup are Kadidiatou Diani (€8,000) and Grace Geyoro (€6,800). PSG has finished second behind Lyon in the French league each of the last two seasons.

“Many club presidents (now) want to rival Aulas’ team,” Nécib-Cadamuro said. “We’ve seen many teams that have invested more, (owners) who sponsor grand teams to try to dethrone Jean-Michel Aulas. His women’s team is an example.”

It’s this sense of rivalry that has helped lift the professional game in France and Europe. It’s the OL example that’s at the heart of why the World Cup’s last grand matches are in Lyon. It’s a form of acknowledgement.

“Aulas has given much to women’s soccer, he’s put in place a recognition of women’s soccer,” Kssis-Martov said. Even the local organizing committee told Liberation in early June that the selection of Lyon for the final matches was a recognition of the city’s place as a center of women’s soccer.

Yet, it’s a bittersweet return for Aulas.

“The dream of Aulas was to have the final at Lyon with the French team in a sold-out stadium,” Kssis-Martov added. “It was a dream sold to the public.”

In interviews with the French press, Aulas stated his eagerness to welcome the French team to Lyon to contest the semifinals. That dream was quashed last Friday by the U.S., as the Americans held off a late push by the French in front of a boisterous sold-out crowd in Paris’ Parc des Princes.

Yet, even without Les Bleues as a centerpiece, it’s still a good week for the house that Aulas built. While the French players of OL Féminin will not be on the pitch, many of their international teammates past and present are contesting the semifinals and final, including the U.S.’s Megan Rapinoe, Morgan Brian and Alex Morgan, England’s Lucy Bronze and Nikita Parris, Sweden’s Caroline Seger and the Netherlands’ Shanice Janice van de Sanden.

And there’s more to winning than hosting Les Bleues during this week’s round of play. As Barbusse pointed out, Lyon is a capstone to a wildly successful tournament for France.

“I think the World Cup will illustrate how you can win and build a following who now see that women play good soccer at a very high level,” she said. “That gets the public in the stands, and can really be something (marketable) with the right marketing and sponsorship.”

That’s a vital element in the equation of how to ensure that women’s soccer is more than just a four-year ephemeral tournament and that it’s a viable, sustainable professional sport. And it’s a key lesson of the Aulas example—that equal investment and resources can build a world-class team that dominates the competition and builds a fan base in the process.

OL’s French players won’t contest the World Cup final this weekend, but the symbolism of holding the tournament’s biggest game in the house that Aulas built is not lost on anyone.
