Over the course of the last few months, I have spoken to Ukrainians every single day, from all walks of life. In that time, in those thousands of conversations, not one, not once, no matter how much they had lost, ever expressed anything other than resolute determination to fightOn the contrary, they have always said two things:
1 - Please help us.
2 - We aren't just fighting for us, we are fighting for you.The first point is not directed to me, but to Britain & the West. Ukrainians want the means with which to defend themselves against a stronger foe. Our choice as individuals in our democracies is whether we agree to provide those means or if we refuse them. That's our only choiceThe second point gets to the heart of why the calls from voices on the British left for a Ukrainian capitulation are so out of sync with Ukrainians. They don't see this as a "border dispute", they see this as a war for liberty, democracy and their future place in Europe. If you are going to make a call for a negotiated settlement of any kind, that requires first and foremost asking Ukrainians what they want. Ukrainians are being systematically shut out of conversations about their own future. It's unacceptable. On a personal note, I was struck by how many different people said to me that they were fighting for "all of us", for "Europe", for "democracy". Surrender is not an option for them. Too many people who consider themselves progressive haven't even taken a moment to ask them.I'm not sure how on earth we've reached a place where someone can go on radio and say "it's almost delusional to think that Ukraine can win this war" after what happened in Kyiv, and defend calls to end arms transfers without even mentioning what Ukrainians want once. For that to be presented as progressive. As humanitarian. As compassionate. Without even the honesty to state in plain terms that what they are talking about is strong-arming Ukraine into signing a deal that would recognise Russia's territorial gains in a naked war of aggression.Thread.We've seen what Russian occupation looks like. I stood at the edge of a mass grave in Bucha with my own eyes and witnessed it. History will not absolve them.

There's a huge lack of expertise on Ukraine in the world. Predictions that Kyiv will fall in three days is just one example of bias and misunderstanding of modern Ukraine and its history. Why is it so and what to do with it? Let's unpack ?First, some personal experience. I graduated from an interdisciplinary Master program in Central and Eastern Europe at the University of Bologna, Italy. However, the real focuses of the curriculum were Russia and the Balkans. Not Poland, Baltic states or Ukraine. This is commonMost students of this program, who were not from the region studied, were Westerners interested in Russia. Who learnt Russian and whose interest towards post-Soviet/post-communist space was Russian-centric. Other countries, like Ukraine, were perceived as 'Little Russia'There was very little emphasis on the imperialist, colonial nature of Russian domination of the region. A Ukrainian perception of history was missing. At some point, a conference on Ukraine was organized that featured all speakers from Russia or the West and just one! UkrainianThis is an example from Italy pre-2014. But I am not sure if a lot has changed since. In the academic and expert circles at least in Western Europe, there was still a dangerous equation of Ukraine and Russia, both in terms of history and current situationThere was little realization that Ukraine - especially after 2014 - was firmly establishing itself as a democracy, with a vibrant and influential civil society, while Russia has been moving towards more repression, autocracy and fascist-like ideologyDangerous myths about history were persistent, such as 'Russia is a winner of WWII' and 'Germany owes a debt to Russian people because of WWII'. In fact, Ukrainians and Belarusians suffered much more in WWII than Russians. Soviet Union wasn't just Russia. It collapsed long agoAs Russia invaded Ukraine in 2014 and launched a genocidal full-scale war in 2022, some in the West are still struggling to get rid of old stereotypes and bias. They want to love both Russia - their first passion - and Ukraine, as 'Little Russia'. But it's impossible nowThere is a huge, unsurmountable gap between Ukraine and Russia that is only growing bigger. A democratic, free, human-rights centered Ukrainian identity is being further crystallized, replacing ethnolinguistic identity. Totalitarian Russia is one the opposite side of the spectrumThat's why it's so difficult for Russian-centric academics, experts and journalists to understand and explain Ukraine. It's impossible to do that if you sit in Moscow, it's equally impossible if you are in the West and don't visit Ukraine. Take their opinions with a grain of salthttps://twitter.com/RyanNoordally/st...61594540302337What to do with it? Listen to and amplify Ukrainian voices in academia, expert and cultural circles. Translate Ukrainian books. Read real history of the region: Timothy Snyder, Anne Applebaum. Recognize your biases and stop viewing a dynamic country, ??, through old stereotypes
