    Hi,

Just to let everyone know that I came across a problem with the memtest86+ v4.20 "Ubuntu 12.10" build on a sandy bridge motherboard + cpu (asus p8p67-deluxe + i7-2600k).

Test #7 (random patter test) fails miserably with gazillions of errors on memory that does actually not have any defect.

The problem exists with the memtest86+ v4.20 that can be found on the UbuntuStudio Desktop 12.10 amd64 DVD, and also the one that is installed and can be selected from the grub boot menu, and probably, but, I did not verify this, on every other Ubuntu 12.10 installation media and install as well.

The original v4.20 build that can be downloaded from the memtest86+ website (both the .iso and .bin) have been verified to not show this problem. The tests do succeed without any reported error.

I was just about to ask about this myself. I got millions of errors at test 7 starting from about 129MB mark with repeating pattern for bad bits (see image). (no errors in other tests).

I have Ivy Bridge motherboard (Asus P8H77-I) with i5-3570K and was using memtest86+ 4.20 from Ubuntu 12.10 desktop amd64 image (ubuntu-12.10-desktop-amd64.iso). I havn't yet tested original 4.20 but will do that now.

EDIT: Original Memtest 4.20 doesnt give any errors.

Yes, this is happening to me too on an AMD A10-5800K APU with my Asus F2A55-M motherboard. Once it gets to Test #7, it freaks out. I actually returned my first RAM as I thought it was bad (turns out it wasn't the 16GB that I thought it was, despite Newegg reporting it as that capacity and the box saying 8GB x 2). I received my replacement RAM, and once it got to test 7, it did the same thing. I was pissed. However, I felt that this seemed to be fishy. I don't feel quite that unlucky! I decided to run it on my Core 2 Duo HP laptop with DDR2 and guess what? Test #7 behaved the same way. I know my laptop is in good shape as it is very stable and as far as I can remember, has never blue screened on me. It is like the random values aren't getting written to the RAM and then the test is performed anyway on it resulting in everything being bad--my theory.

I'm glad that I'm not the only one!

EDIT: I forgot to mention this is the same memtest86 as OP was using on the Ubuntu 12.10 install image.

EDIT2: Well guys, I think this may be our solution: http://forum.canardpc.com/threads/68001-Memtest86-5.00-Beta-available-%21-Need-betatesters-%21. However, it doesn't explain why my older, supported laptop failed on the exact same test.

Original memtest 4.20 doesnt have this bug, only memtest 4.20 included with Ubuntu 12.10 and some other distributions.

I found Ubuntu bug report here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...+/+bug/1071209
