Voir la version complète : HOWTO: start Memtest86+ from NTLDR
Hi!
Here is the recipe to start Memtest86+ from the Windows XP bootloader (NTLDR).
copy these files to the root of the system partition (almost always C:\) :
- GRLDR
- memtest.bin
- menu.lst
(they are in the attached ZIP file)
Add this line to the boot.ini file:
C:\grldr="Start GRUB4DOS"
If the partition is not the first on the first disk, then change the "(hd0,0)" part in menu.lst
Done.
Now there should be a new entry in the boot menu : "Start GRUB4DOS"
If you select it, another menu should pop up, with memtest in it.
The memtest image is version 2.01.
I did not test other versions.
Here is the GRLDR file attached.
Ah, the forum refuses it :
Votre fichier de 99,3 Ko octets dépasse la limite du forum de 97,7 Ko pour ce type de fichier.
(if anyone speaks french)
I put it here (http://www.alter.si/tabla/files/590076-GRLDR.zip) instead.
More notes:
- the files are from my USB key (it was created by c't magazine VistaPE creator)
- I did not test other versions of GRLDR
- the USB key uses the Vista boot loader (BCD), so it is possible to set up memtest on Vista systems too; I just run on XP now and did not found any tool to read the BCD configuration
how can i execute it in windows

You cannot. Memtest does not run from within an operating system. This is about starting memtest from the windows boot loader, which is only the very first part of windows that gets started and does nothing more than loading the basis of the OS to get going. With the above you can make the boot loader load memtest instead of Windows.

I like my old argument. I still think running Memtest from the NTLDR isn't a very good idea. Just boot from the CD or floppy.

- what old argument ?
- why is runnng memtest from NTLDR not a very good idea ?
- and if you don't have a CD or floppy (unit or medium) ?

Believe me, it's not worth the argument. The former X86-Secret forum that was here before it was moved to Canard. I am just saying it's not a very good idea to do that. It's my opinion.
