All:
I'm trying to fix a Toshiba Satilite laptop for a friend. It was blue-screening shortly after loading Windows XP.
The blue screen message referred to a Page error in non-paged area, and a google search suggested a RAM problem and messages recommended running memtest.
I opened up the access panel and found two memory slots containing two 512mb memory modules. One is a Samsung and the other is a Kingston. My friend bought this laptop from another person so I don't know the upgrade history.
Here's the result: If I run memtest with both memory modules in, it crashes (unexpected interrupt), usually within a minute of starting. But if I do memtest with just ONE memory module (either one), they both pass all 8 memtest tests with no errors. Both moduals also seem to pass in either socket, provided the other socket is empty. But with both at the same time, memtest crashes every time.
What should I make of that?
Also, before running memtest, I was attempting to fix the computer by running chkdsk /F or chkdsk /R. But now, even with one memory modual in (which passes memtest), I get a blue screen before the desktop comes up, safe mode or normal mode.
Did I corrupt the OS by running chkdsk while there was a hardware issue?
